VOLLANS, Robert Franks (1916-1972) Leeds 1933; DL Middlesex 1947; DL Westminster 1950; LB Westminster 1965-1972
He will be remembered in particular for his report Library cooperation in Great Britain (1952) and for his editorship in 1968 of Libraries for the people: international studies in librarianship in honour of Lionel R McColvin, his old Chief. His own ill-health made him exceptionally sympathetic towards service to the handicapped, especially to the visually handicapped and, after three years as Honorary Treasurer of the NLB (1968-1970), he became Vice-Chairman of its Council, an office he held until his death.
